Supporting the Ride_Group and its vote

It is at times like this that I realise how unforgiving politics must be, when those who are genuinely interested in looking after the best interests do everything they can to gauge what is right and acceptable (giving people the opportunity to vote) and then find what they put in place is either no longer acceptable or continually "white anted" by the more vocal.

Let me re-cap on what we've done and why we did it.

Some time ago (before many of our current riders joined us) a number of our members formed a splinter group. There were perhaps a few reasons for that ...one of which was the fact that a number of members wanted to get their ride out of the way earlier and before it got too hot.

When we started approaching the warmer months this year there was some talk of more people who were not so happy to be out in the heat.

We were keen to avoid further splintering of the group so it seemed the only fair way to gauge consensus was to ask Ride_Group members to vote on their preference. The vote was taken, the results were clear and the change was made ....and that really should have been the end of it.

Unfortunately some of our members didn't like the fact that the vote didn't go their way. This hasn't been helped by circumstances in the last couple of weeks where we've had:- 1) A Rider who hadn't bothered to vote re-join us then complain the ride is too early, 2) those who've actually been able to ride preferring the later start.

From those who didn't like the vote result (and even from someone who voted for the 7:30 start and has now changed his mind) we're seeing requests for additional part ways hook up points, to join along the way or arrangements to  meet at the coffee stop instead. This is completely contrary to intent of making a group arrangement and riding together as a group (which is the reason we had the vote in the first place).

Frankly this is a little akin to voting in a political party (that actually delivers on its promises) then white anting it because you've changed your mind or the popular vote doesn't match your own view.

My personal preference would have been to ride even earlier but had the vote been for an 8:00 start I would have accepted the popular vote and supported it.

I've managed the Ride_Group blog from the start and I do my best to gauge opinion and reflect the choices of the group and I normally don't begrudge the time I spend each week trying to keep people informed especially since it gives me the chance to spend time with people I call friends and have high regard for.

If you're going to be part of the group then respect, stand by and support the decisions made by the group. Don't expect my support if you selfishly decide to weaken the group to suit your own differing preference.

Saturday December 15 - Ellenbrook Loop

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind
Organiser's email: Robert@robert-hind.com
Organiser's mobile telephone no: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Mainly Flat
Estimated Distance: 65 kms+
Start Point: Narrows - North Side
Start Time: Narrows 7:30

John has suggested a new ride for this Saturday.

Narrows to vines using Swan Valley route then through vines to Dome at Ellenbrook. Follow Lord Street to Reid Highway, turn right ahead to Beechboro, turn left and head through to Bayswater train station then retrace cycle path back to start.

[Editor's note - I understand that there has been some discussion about reverting to an 8am start and that there have been some misunderstandings about who preferred the 8am start. Recent votes showed a clear preference for a 7:30 start, so we'll stay with that for now]

Saturday December 8, 2012 - Mediocrity Ride

Ride Organiser: Alan Perkins
Organiser's email:  alanperkins2000@yahoo.com
Organisers mobile tel: 0401 303 283
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Mainly Flat
Estimated Distance: 50 kms+
Start Point: Maylands, Narrows - South Side
Start Time: Maylands 7:00, Narrows 7:30

Alan Perkins introduced to the "Mediocrity Ride" in April. It was, well "ok" (according to half the group). Some said the ride was really good ...but that was thanks only to the weather. Some said the ride was perhaps, "possibly repeatable". So we've decided to repeat it.

The "Mediocrity Ride" features ideas carefully pilfered from other people, and offers something to most. It is the ride rated "OK" by 5 out of 10 people! If you're excited about this ride ...DON'T BE ...you've missed the point!

Starting at Narrows - Southside, the "Mediocrity Ride" is a leisurely 50 km tour. The terrain is mainly flat with some gentle hills (ie "Ken friendly"); uses a mixture of cycle paths and roads, and intersperses faster stretches with slower, more technical sections.

Alan tells me that this time around he is thinking of re-routing the "Mediocrity Ride" to run it in the reverse direction. It will have a different coffee stop and everything: but don't worry - it'll still be really average!

Alan anticipates an 7:30 am start from the Narrows (South side), with the "over achievers" having the option of a 7:00 departure from Maylands.

Summer Time Start - Voting Results

Here are the results of the "Summer Time Start" votes.

Note: Where a voter something like they preferred a 7:30 am start but could live with an 8:00 am start, 7:30 was shown as 1st preference and 8:00 as second preference. Where there was no mention of a second time 1st and 2nd preference showed the same time.

The result is 6 to 3 in favour of a 7:30 am start at the Narrows (with Maylands being 30 minutes earlier when there is also a Maylands start).

Saturday November 24 - Change of Plans!! Freo instead

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind
Organiser's email: Robert@robert-hind.com
Organiser's mobile telephone no: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Terrain: Mainly Flat
Estimated Distance: 65 kms+
Start Point: Maylands, Narrows - North Side
Start Time: Maylands 7:30, Narrows 8:00

*** Note: - Summer start time ***

We had scheduled Alan's "Mediocrity Ride" for this weekend..BUT Alan won't be riding and nor will Nigel, so it is doubtful we would get the route right.

So...we'll do the old familiar "Friendly Freo" with the usual obligatory coffee stop (in Fremantle). We'll have the usual Maylands Railway Station start at 7:30 am then hook up at the Narrows. The ride will start from the Narrows Bridge (North Side - where the bike path goes under the freeway bridge) at 8:00 am.

NOTE: This ride will have an 8:00 am Narrows start even if forecast is for over 30.

I've taken the liberty of scheduling Alan's "Mediocrity Ride" for this Saturday so lets hope Alan is riding as I wouldn't have a clue which way to go!!

Alan Perkins introduced to the "Mediocrity Ride" in April. It was, well "ok" (according to half the group). Some said the ride was really good ...but that was thanks only to the weather. Some said the ride was perhaps, "possibly repeatable". So we've decided to repeat it.

Starting at Narrows - Southside, the "Mediocrity Ride" is a leisurely 50 km tour, via Kwinana Freeway and Mount Henry bridge, of the Riverton environs with a coffee stop at Lo Quay cafe, before returning via South Perth to the Narrows. The terrain is mainly flat with some gentle hills; uses a mixture of cycle paths and roads, and intersperses faster stretches with slower, more technical sections.

Summer Start Time vote

I understand the temperature dependent earlier start caused some confusion and delays on Saturday Nov 17. The fact that I nominated Narrows South as the start point (when Narrows North was more appropriate for a Hillarys Ride) didn't help!

Firstly some background..to explain why, when changing to the summer start time of 8:00 am rather than 8:30 am at the Narrows, we had added the proviso of an even earlier start when the temperature is forecast to go over 30C.

In recent years some of our, valued, Ride_Group members have preferred to do an earlier ride and haven't ridden with the main group. This "splintering" started in the hotter months, with their preference to get in an earlier ride to avoid the heat and this continued on with a separate group riding throughout the year.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this and this blog posting isn't implying criticism in any way ...just providing an explanation. It is perfectly natural that different times will suit different people to fit in with their other activities and we're never going to please all the people all the time

The split times were designed to suit those of our group who have got used to and prefer the later start while trying to get the ride done and dusted earlier when the heat turned up.

It looks like that plan won't work. So, we need to "lock in" an agreed summer start time. Please let me have your vote [state Option AND Start time] so we can set a time that suits most. The options are:-

Option 1: 6:00 am at the Narrows
Option 2: 6:30 am at the Narrows
Option 3: 7:00 am at the Narrows
Option 4: 7:30 am at the Narrows
Option 5: 8:00 am at the Narrows

In all instances the Maylands start would be 30 minutes earlier than the agreed time at the Narrows.

I must admit that with my partner, Andrea, now joining a group doing early rides that my preference will be either Option 3 or 4.

One note though... regardless of which option we agree on - the Familiarisation Ride on Dec 1 will be as already published (8:00 am).

I make mistakes!

I work in the transport business and will never forget seeing a consignment note that was an absolute mess with scribbled writing almost all over it. Then there was one section showing a neatly typed message "I live my life like I write con-notes...fast and with many mistakes".

Well ... I can't say that I live a fast life ...but I do make many mistakes and some of those are on this web site and its blog postings. When I discover a mistake I'll re-edit a blog posting and update the posting BUT updating the posting doesn't mean it is re-emailed.

If one of the blog email mesages looks wrong ....take the opportunity to look at the posting on the web site. There is a good chance the error has been fixed.

Rides switch to Summer times 2012

October 13 - York Community Safety Day

Amy Taylor (Nee Cartwright) is one of the founders of the Ride_Group. Amy, Aaron and their son, Zac now live in York where Amy is a serving member of the WA Police. Amy tells me the York Community Safety Day promises to be a great day and I plan to take my grand children to it.
York Community Safety Day

The event  is being held on Saturday 13 October 2012, from 10.00am to 4.00pm on the oval at the York Recreation Centre.

This is the largest community safety event to be held in Western Australia.    The event is FREE to enter.  Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

On the day there will be:
  • Free rides for children
  • From 10.am to 11.am a display from the WA Police Pipe Band
  • A display from Fire and Rescue with a vehicle recovery and fire fighting
  • The RAC Rescue Helicopter will be making an appearance (pending any emergency)
  • Prizes and giveaways and lots more

There will be 18 displays from agencies that contribute to community safety.  Something for everyone.

This will be a great day for everyone, but in particular for kids. There will be displays of the latest and greatest emergency service vehicles (I can confirm from WAPOL we’ll have the new BAD – drug and alcohol – bus and a new concept Police Motocycle) as well as other safety stake holders. We’ve organised Rescue 65 (RAC rescue chopper) to attend and land at the event – obviously this is pending any real emergency and the new Police chopper will be a backup plan (fingers crossed).

Moonrise kingdom - Friday the 31st of August at 7pm at Luna Leederville. To book go to: http://www.trybooking.com/BTIB

Please pass this on to all your friends!

All profits we make from these movies will be given to Cathi to help her in her recovery!

A bit of a quick background for those who don’t know the story:
Cathi’s dream cycling trip in France turned into a disaster – she had a crash down a mountain resulting in concussion, bruising and injuries as well as bad spinal damage. She was airlifted to a Hospital in Paris and was kept there for a while before she was able to have back surgery to assist with her crushed vertebrae. She is slowly recovering and arrive back in Perth on Friday August 17 (a long flight for someone who can’t sit longer than an hour but she has a nurse travelling with her which hopefully will help). Cathi was taken straight to Shenton Park Hospital and still has a lot of work to do to recover.

Throughout this whole ordeal Cathi has been a real trooper considering she is in a lot of pain and has had no family with her in a foreign country!

Sunday August 11, 2012 - [OffRoad] familiarisation ride

Our next Life Cycle for CanTeen [OffRoad] familiarisation ride is on Sunday August 12 starting at 8:30am.
The ride will start from the corner of Darlington Road and Glen Road – at the former Darlington railway station – there is ample parking.
Our leader will be Francis (fresh back from watching some of the Tour de France) and he will also tell you a little of the history of the Heritage Trail.

Francis says...
I will start the ride a bit differently from the usual Heritage trail ride:
+ we will start by going on the trail down to the Pines;
+ down Benong Rd
+ down Maslin Crescent
+ down Glen Road
+ on Victor Road
+ then on some bush track past some old quarries
+ eventually to join back to the Heritage Trail on Coulston Rd to cycle down to Bellevue
- On the way back I propose to shortcut at Stoneville Rd to go back to Mundaring – yes it is a long climb, but we will cut a number of kilometres for the people unfamiliar with mountain biking, anyway I will ask at the start of the ride.

We hope to see lots of you there again this time, but can't promise such fine weather as last time.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO LET JENNY KNOW IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO JOIN THE RIDE

Ride style: Social

  2. bike path to along south side of river to Nicholson Rd
  3. Spencer St, Corfield Rd, Lake Rd, Armadale Rd to Dome or Gloria Jeans in Armadale
  4. Armadale Rd, Lake Rd, Ranford Rd to Roe Hwy
  5. bike path along Roe Hwy to Kwinana Fwy and then Fwy bike path to Narrows
Prior to tackling the section to Roe Highway we'll sort out our strategy to ensure this remains safe.

Saturday July 28, 2012 - Unfamiliar But Not Unfriendly Freo ride

Ride Organiser: Paul Kittler
Organiser's email pjkittler@iinet.net.au
Organiser's mobile tel:
0468 462 528
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Mainly flat - but some hills

Estimated Distance: 52 kms+
Start Point: Maylands, Narrows - South Side
Start Time: Maylands 8:00, Narrows (North) 8:30

This weekend's ride is a bit hillier and slightly longer than the Friendly Freo ... and it doesn't stop in Freo ...hence it is being called "the Unfamiliar But Not Unfriendly Freo ride".

Starting from the Narrows (North Side), it hugs the river on its way to Freo via Peppermint Grove. Some hills involved but not too painful if the pace is modest. Once into Freo, go straight past the usual cafe stop (this may be the most painful part of the ride for some people) and continue down Marine Parade to South Fremantle, then head inland via Clontarf, Winterfold and Farrington Roads. Cross the freeway, turn left through Leeming and Bullcreek to the coffee stop at Denada in Brentwood (or Mount Pleasant, depending on which review you read). When we are stuffed with sufficient calories, we will remount for the short roll back to the Narrows.

The total distance of this loop is about 52km. None of you will know the exact route, so you'll have to follow me and enjoy the ride.
Pick up points are, as usual, Maylands at 8:00 and Narrows (North Side) at 8:30.

Let us know if you're riding!

Remember to let us know if you're planning to join us for a ride.

There are some simple reasons for this:-
  1. If we know you're coming and aren't there when we're ready to go we'll wait or contact you to see if you're ok and on your way.
  2. People will feel more inclined to come along when they know others that are riding
  3. Others will feel there is more interest in the ride
  4. If we need to make changes for some reason (ie weather) then we know who we need to contact (share your mobile number).
A reply to Rides@robert-hind.com will let the whole group know. At the very least a courtesy message to the nominated Ride organiser is requested. Emails are usually fine ..but if you're letting us know fairly late an sms might work best.

Organisers mobile tel: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Mainly flat
Estimated Distance: 50 kms
Start Place: Maylands Railway Station, Narrows (South)
Start Time: 8:00 am, 8:30 am

We'll meet at Maylands at 8:00 or the Narrows (South side) at 8:30.  We'll ride down the Freeway bike path, then detour along the Roe Highway bike path before turning back to Denada at  Brentwood or Deep Water Point for coffee. After coffee we'll head back to the Narrows.

We used to call this ride the Roe Highway jaunt but the last time the group did this route there were so many punctures we've re-named it the "anti-inflationary" ride!!

We will include a split for the more energetic to have a faster burst.
